UKLA Author Award Winner 2011

The UKLA Author Award

Winner:  Margaret Mallett Choosing and Using Fiction and Non-Fiction 3-11’

This award is given every 2 years to the author of a text about the teaching of literacy written by a UKLA member.

The decision of the panel to give the award to the author of ‘Choosing and Using Fiction and Non-Fiction 3-11’was unanimous. This book, by Margaret Mallett, brings together a life-time of research and teaching.

We recommend this book to all teachers, students and teacher educators who want to:

  •  expand their own knowledge of books for children and
  • encourage children to become enthusiastic and committed readers

In her review of Margaret’s book in the latest edition of 4-11,  Eve Bearne draws our attention to the beginning of the Non-fiction section, where Margaret Mallet adapts a quotation from James Britton: ‘We cannot make difficult things easy, but we can help make the effort of young learners worthwhile’ (p. 232). I would say that this aptly summarises what she herself has done in this book.

Finally, a word from Margaret Meek  from the invaluable on-line  Books For Keeps :

This book is about making readers. A compact summary of its contents would not do it justice. It is the account of a life’s work; it deserves thanks and readers.

This award is presented to a member of the Association whose text (on paper or on screen) most effectively supports the teaching of literacy.

* text supports the teaching of literacy
* can be for any/all key stages from EYFS to KS4
* relevant to current classroom practice
* reflects current developments in literacy research
* encourages teachers to be: reflective, innovative, creative

Panel:  Bev Barnes, Anglea Colvert, Joy Court, Lynda Graham(chair), Rebecca Phillips and Roger McDonald
