Inspiring literacy moments at a UKLA conference

This might be a slightly different kind of inspiring moment to some you might receive!

At the 2011 conference in Chester I went to a double workshop run by Teresa Cremin and others. (sorry I can’t remember or find the title of the workshop but am fairly sure it was on Sunday morning!)

We were invited to write for ourselves for just a few minutes. It is such a long time since I took the time to write for my own pleasure and I enjoyed it so much that on the way back to London I wrote a poem for my two little grandchildren. They were about to move house and I had bought them the last copy in the conference bookshop of ‘Clancy and Millie and the very fine house’ by Libby Gleeson, which was short-listed for the UKLA children’s book awards. I sent the poem, with the book, as a ‘moving day’ present for Ben and Lara.

I had a ‘big’ birthday in August and we took the family away for a weekend which was tremendous fun. A few weeks later it was my turn to receive a book and a poem, a photographic and written record of my birthday celebrations.

Just a short activity in a workshop context, but it has rekindled the poet in me and encouraged my son and daughter-in-law to write too. Thank you Teresa et al!
