Literacy Leaders of the Future!

Last week we held a three day conference for our 3rd Year BA English specialists. The conference runs every year and is a celebration of the years the students have spent with us at Roehampton University on the Primary Education degree course. It provides a chance for them to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that they will encounter in the years ahead. The conference was a great success and, from the positive feedback we received, it seems as if people thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There was certainly lots of laughter and discussion during the sessions, especially the fantastic practical drama session run by Stuart Barter from the performing arts education company, 'Artis'. The presentations were really engaging and covered topics such as parental involvement, using film and exploring the role of the co-ordinator. The conference culminated in a lively and inspiring performance by the poet Roger Stevens.

These days were designed to help prepare the students for being literacy leaders of the future and we hope many went away inspired to develop their passions and interests in their schools. We aimed to help the students to develop a positive view and appreciation of the creative potential of primary English teaching.

Although Roehampton is an institutional member of UKLA, many of our students expressed an interest in becoming individual members as NQTs. We are sure we'll be in touch with them in the years to come. We are very proud of them all!
