Storytelling

Why a Storytelling SIG?

We view stories as seeds; you plant them and they grow. The same is true for the act of storytelling. Considerable academic research highlights the importance of narrative learning and storytelling as a teaching methodology that can raise attainment in schools; particularly, but not exclusively, within literacy. Surprisingly, no place yet exists for proponents of this approach to share their models, skills and experiences.

The UKLA Storytelling SIG, run by teachers-writers Matthew Friday and Ty Van Brown, aims to fill the void: bringing together professionals from diverse fields of academia, education, research, professional writing, performance/entertainment, and so on.

The hope is that the UKLA Storytelling SIG will act as a medium for creating a nationwide storytelling community, with members sharing ideas and stories; reflections and research; resources and techniques.

The ultimate goal is to ensure that the benefits and practice of storytelling can be shared, encouraged and utilized within classrooms and the broader educational sphere.

Greetings Fellow Storytelling SIGsters...

Good news from our SIG member, Alastair Daniel. He has a great new book out..."Storytelling Across the Primary Curriculum." An academic and accessible exploration of the power of storytelling in all its forms. Definitely worth a read...

Hello fellow SIG members.

As mentioned in our recent e-mail communication, we think it could be a good time for sharing stories again. Many of us will have found and told new stories in the last few months, and as always these will be valuable material for the rest of us storytellers and those of with an educational interest.

With this in mind, over the course of February, please could you all e-mail in a story that you feel would be usable by your fellow members, and we will distribute these either in the last week of February or the first week of March.

Any further requests or suggestions for activities that we could collectively engage in (to help forward the use of storytelling in schools), please do let us know. As ever, please feel free to use this Message Board to alert us and other members of any other storytelling activities, conferences or events happening in the UK.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Matt & Ty
