2003–2012 has been designated United Nations’ Literacy Decade and the UN has pledged that by 2015 all the world’s children will complete primary schooling.
UKLA is determined to play its part in supporting these initiatives and calls on all UKLA members and others interested in literacy to support developing countries in achieving the same access to books and literacy education as that enjoyed by developed nations.
UKLA runs the Books for Africa project. The money raised from this project is used to buy books directly in African countries. This supports local publishing initiatives and ensures the books bought for a school are culturally appropriate.
We have already started this vital work and we hope to gradually increase the number of schools we are able to support.
