Children have always been fascinated by the world around them but in modern environments they are particularly intrigued by the print which they find in their homes, on clothes, in their street and in their local shops. Parents of young children have watched and listened to their excited offspring talk, copy and point out aspects of the print which surrounds them, well before they ever start formal school. For many years some parents have tried to capitalise on this interest but it is only relatively recently that educationalists have also recognised the importance of these early experiences as vital indicators for early development of children’s literacy development.
