for the United Kingdom Literacy Association 2007-9

Public Profile and Sphere of Influence

  1. Continue to extend the Association’s role in promoting literacy education.
  2. Continue to liaise with external bodies and groups, including government agencies.
  3. Continue to ensure that UKLA plays an active and strategic role in informing and influencing national policy.

Website

  1. Establish a web-development task group.
  2. Conduct a review of officers/members use of the website.
  3. Extend the provision offered for members.

Management

  1. Sustain the induction support for UKLA administrator.
  2. Ensure sufficient space for UKLA office/resources.
  3. Increase communication and sub committee chair awareness of administrative function.
  4. Continue support of offices and committee members in their roles.

Finance

  1. Put in place effective financial monitoring.
  2. Provide financial details of Association as and when required.
  3. Ensure financial planning supports and further develops the work of the Association.

Conferences

  1. Pilot a scheme with 2/3 regional representatives establishing liaison teams with LA advisors, universities, librarians.
  2. Liaise with other organisations/SIGs for national conferences.
  3. Pilot a scheme in Liverpool for local teachers to shortlist for the Children’s Book Award.

International

  1. Continue participation in IDEC together with continue collaboration to establish the Federation of European Literacy Associations (FELA).
  2. Consolidation and development of ‘Books for Africa’ project.
  3. Investigate establishing an exchange with another national association.
  4. Re-examine the criteria/advertising for sponsorship at international conference.

Membership and Awards

  1. Increase membership of NQTs by supporting NQT sub group initiatives.
  2. Widen advertising for awards and continue to organize and publicize.
  3. Establish the role of honorary members of the Association.

Marketing and Publicity

  1. Develop a marketing strategy.
  2. Complete the non-members database to use for targeted marketing.
  3. Co-ordinate the work of all sub-committees in the area of marketing.
  4. Develop the web site as a marketing tool.

Publications

  1. Develop the scope and responsibilities of committee members.
  2. Increase publicity for UKLA publications.
  3. Develop the publications section of the website.

Research

  1. Further develop the dissemination of the Association’s research work.
  2. Review and publish research criteria and policies.
  3. Continue to promote interest in the UKLA Research Prize and the Helen Arnold research award for reading.

Leadership

  1. Negotiate and support regional representatives in developing their role within the Association.
  2. Continue to involve those influential in literacy education in the work of the Association.
  3. Provide members with support for career development through conferences, research and publication opportunities, membership of sub-committees, task groups and Special Interest Groups.
  4. Involve and support the new President Elect and Vice President in their new roles.
