John Downing Award

UKLA is pleased today to announce the shortlist for the John Downing Award.

The John Downing award is given every two years to an inspiring, creative teacher of literacy.

Shortlist:
Alison Binney The Nethehall School, Cambridge
Michelle Gregory Oakfield First School, Windsor
Marion Hampton Lambeth Academy, London
Roger Macdonald Saxon Way Primary School Gillingham
Gill Robins Sunhill Junior School, Alresford
Penny Tyack Various Schools
Sue Wilkinson High Green Primary School, Sheffield

The award will be made at the UKLA International Conference at the University of Winchester.

The John Downing Award is named after the first president of the organisation, know then as UKRA. John Downing was president from 1962-1965.  During his presidency the first UKRA conference was held, in Oxford in 1965.

Criteria (some of the following):

• Innovative use of a range of texts to inspire children’s creative productions;
• Inspiring colleagues to explore innovative literacy practices;
• Valuing children’s voice in literacy;
• Reflective on his/her own practice;
• Developing partnerships for literacy learning;
• Involving parents / outside communities
