Raising Boys’ Achievements in Writing

Eve Bearne, Teresa Grainger and Helen Wolstencroft

Concerns about boys’ achievements in literacy, and in writing in particular, are not new. However, current government test results show a continuing (and in some areas, increasing) gap between boys’ and girls’ achievements in literacy. This report is the culmination of the UKLA and PNS research programme of research into the issue carried out in collaboration with the Primary National Strategy. Teacher research groups in three Local Authorities worked on three week integrated units of work designed to raise boys’ engagement, motivation and achievement. The report provides details of the improvements made, analyses of writing samples, sections on practitioner development, examples of surveys and discussion of the implications for school and LA based initiatives.
